(Eagle Watch #9) What's an 'l' (or an 'ie') between friends?

7.10.05
Hey, not everyone's a great speller.

And hey, I'm as prone to innocent mistakes as anyone (well, not really, but let's just pretend for modesty's sake that I am).

But what a whopper in Saturday's Berkshire Eagle, in "In Search of Lady Day", Alison (only kidding) Allison Tracy's review of Ronald K. Brown's "Blueprint of a Lady" at Jacob's Pillow.

Throughout the review, jazz legend Billie Holiday, to whom Brown's program pays tribute, is referred to as "Billy Holliday."

In the course of normal events, maybe you could give this a free pass. But coming just weeks after Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals was referred to incessantly as Toots "Hibbard" ("That's Hibbert to You"), one has to wonder what's going on at the copy desk at 75 South Church Street in Pittsfield.

It's not as if the proper spelling of this American icon's name isn't readily available, nor as if her name wasn't plastered all over the Jacob's Pillow program and in all the marketing material for the show.

Sadly, it suggests that Eagle writers and editors are not being given the backup support that is so desperately needed to insure accuracy of reporting. They have my utmost sympathy, as I certainly know the feeling.

Or.... maybe someone confused Billie Holiday with Judy Holliday?
