Talk about a small world
6.4.09
I was having lunch today with Elaine Khosrova, a professional colleague and casual acquaintance -- we've known each other for about four years, and have often seen and talked to each other in passing, at work or socially, but never really had a sitdown like we did today -- when I asked Elaine where she was from originally.
"Long Island," she said.
I'm from Long Island too, I said. Where on Long Island?
"Islip," she said. At which point I assumed she was teasing me, that she knew I was from Islip and was just taking the piss, as the English say.
Really, I said. Are you really from Islip?
"Yes," said Elaine.
How old are you, I asked.
I'm not going to tell you the answer, but I will say it was pretty much the same as how old I am.
Where in Islip did you live?
She told me. I know exactly where it is.
Elaine, I said to Elaine, you and I grew up together less than a mile away from each other.
Now she didn't quite believe me, but it was very easy to prove once we began comparing places and landmarks.
Islip is a small town, certainly was then. How was it possible that we never laid eyes on each other?
Elaine went to Catholic school in WEST Islip, and attended church in EAST Islip, whereas I went to Islip public schools, and attended synagogue in Bay Shore (these are all adjoining towns). So even though we lived so close to each other, we basically lived in different (parallel?) universes.
And then we each went off and lived a few decades of our adult lives, on very different paths.
And now we find ourselves neighbors again -- closely, sometimes, as Elaine occasionally writes for Berkshire Living, and relatedly, as the magazine Elaine edits, CULTURE, is sort of a cousin to Berkshire Living by way of shared personnel. And living very close to each other, each in our own way refugees from past lives, here in the Berkshires.
But fortunately (for me, at least -- I can't speak for Elaine), now we do know each other, and see each other, and support each other in our endeavors.
And that is Berkshire Living.
