Deborah Voigt Headlines Mahaiwe Gala

5.12.11
(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) - The annual Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center Gala on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 8, will feature opera’s great dramatic soprano, Deborah Voigt, accompanied by Brian Zeger, in a recital performance of both opera and Broadway standards.

Tickets to the Mahaiwe Gala, which will benefit the Mahaiwe’s year-round programming fund, are $67 to $127 (for the performance) and $500, which includes a post-performance reception with Ms. Voigt at the neighboring Castle Street Cafe.

Voigt has made her mark in popular Italian operatic parts, such as Tosca, Aida, and Amelia. Her “home” opera house is the Metropolitan Opera, where she wowed critics and fans alike with her turn this year as Puccini's quintessential New World heroine, Minnie, in the Met’s centenary staging of La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) – with one performance broadcast “Live in HD” from the Met last January to 46 countries worldwide.

This month, Voigt takes on one of the greatest opera roles in the repertoire for the first time: Brunnhilde, in Robert Lepage's highly anticipated new Met production of Wagner's Die Walkure.

Voigt is also an active recitalist and performer of Broadway standards. In the 2011 summer Voigt will appear at the Glimmerglass Festival (Cooperstown, NY ), singing the title role in Irving Berlin's beloved musical Annie Get Your Gun for 14 performances in July and August. The American musical theater piece is to be performed with full orchestra and chorus and without amplification, the way it was first heard. Voigt will also be the inaugural Artist in Residence working with the Glimmerglass Young Artists Program.

In her live performance at the Mahaiwe on May 21st she will be accompanied by pianist Brian Zeger, in a program divided between arias by Verdi, Respighi and Strauss as well as American art songs and Broadway show tunes by Leonard Bernstein, Ben Moore, and Amy Beach.

The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was recently restored with great attention to its historic beauty. It is known throughout northwest Connecticut and the Litchfield/Berkshire Hills communities for its extremely popular "Live in HD" broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera and London's National Theatre.

The performing arts center also offers world-class live programming throughout the year, including music, dance, and theatrical presentations, as well as classic and family film screenings and a variety of educational programs including daytime performances for area students and pre-show lectures and post-show Q&As for adults.

The Mahaiwe Gala this May will benefit the theater's year-round programming fund. Tickets are $67 and $127. A very limited number of tickets are available at $500 and include a post-performance reception with Ms. Voigt.

The Mahaiwe Box Office is located at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington, Mass. Box Office Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6pm and three hours before show times. For tickets and information, visit Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center or call 413.528.0100.
