Of Magazines and Baths

4.24.11
My consumption, i.e. actual reading, of the dozens of magazines that come into my home has increased exponentially since I have become addicted to baths (a result of becoming addicted to yoga, both addictions which will be the subject of future blogposts, as well as the topic of addiction itself).

This has led me to conclude that magazines are ideally suited – or even intended – to be read in the bathtub.

And this has me, a magazine editor, wondering how this realization might influence my work going forward. Meaning, when considering future story ideas and assignments, will I subject them to a “bathtub test” – will their suitability for being read in the bath be part of the overall determination for assignment?

Certainly when entering the bath, I shuffle through my large pile of magazines looking for the ones in general, and the articles in particular, most suitable for this sort of reading.

These have included a wide range of pieces in the last few months – articles about philosophical concepts in Yoga Journal, profiles of celebrities in Rolling Stone, financial advice in Money, health and wellness advice in Men’s Health and Esquire, and, just today, a persuasive think-piece on the irrelevance of Islamism to the Arab Spring uprisings in Harper’s.

So it’s not easy to categorize “appropriate for the bath.” In some ways I think the medium is indeed the message – a bath takes time and is wet; it takes some time to read an entire magazine article (about the length of a bath or so) and it really doesn’t matter if your magazine gets wet in the process.

Of course, this article also bodes well for the future of print magazines -- until the day, that is, that they manufacture waterproof digital readers and tablets. May that day be forever and far off.
