An Original Joke
11.4.09
On my way to work today, I actually made up a joke. I think this is the first time in my life I ever created an original joke.
First the joke, then the story of how it came about:
Did you hear about the funeral director who created a chain of funeral parlors in shopping malls across the nation?
It was quite an undertaking.
So, what happened was I was just driving to work down a country road, my mind wandering, idly listening to my iPod, when a line sung by singer-songwriter Jennifer Kimball jumped out at me.
The line was something about "her father was six feet under."
That phrase made me think of the TV show, "Six Feet Under." I was mulling that over for awhile, and thinking about funeral homes.
That got me to thinking about the word "undertaker," and then my brain simply went off to "undertaking," and the possibility of punning on the word.
It was easy then just to fill in the gap between funeral homes and undertaking. I just made up that scenario, and presto, a joke was born.
As I said, I have never done this before. I don't know if I ever will again. I don't know if this is how most jokes are born, or "written."
And I realize the joke isn't exactly to die for.
