Why I love my hometown
9.18.09
Ten reasons I love living in downtown Great Barrington, Mass.:
1. Yesterday evening, I did commerce with two separate retail and service vendors, and in both cases and for different reasons, money never changed hands. Nor was anything even signed. There was just an understanding that later on, I'd return to pay.
2. Musicians play real music on the sidewalks almost every night.
3. The Berkshire Co-op Market
4. The Triplex Cinema
5. The pear trees.
6. The downtown still primarily consists of beautiful, well-constructed, early-20th century buildings.
7. I can get the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal delivered to my doorstep.
8. Berkshire Organics delivers vegetables, fruit, and other items to my door every week.
9. There is an independently owned, brick-and-mortar store that still sells carefully chosen CDs, including classic jazz and classical music (Tune Street).
10. A mountain, woods, and country roads are all just a ten-minute walk away from the downtown.
