Club Helsinki and Helsinki Cafe to close
8.19.09
Music lovers are reacting with sadness and shock at the news that Club Helsinki will close on August 31, 2009, according to a press release just issued by the nightclub.
Helsinki Cafe and Tea Company, the restaurant that spawned the nightclub, long a fixture in Great Barrington, Mass., and a social nexus of the creative community in the region -- as well as a favorite dining spot owing to its creative cuisine, fashioned by founder and owner Deborah McDowell -- will also shutter its doors at the end of the month.
The text of the announcement follows:
(Great Barrington, Mass., August 19, 2009) -- After 15 remarkable years, Berkshire County will see the end of an era when, the combined business of Helsinki Café and Tea Company and Club Helsinki will close its doors. We are heartbroken to say that the curtain will go down for the last time on August 31st.
We would like to say thank you to all our friends and supporters, all the artists and musicians who ever walked through our doors, to everyone who appreciated something singular and homemade from our kitchens, to all the children we raised and coddled and to anyone in the press who found the work we do to be an important voice in the Berkshires and beyond.
We especially want to thank our incredible staff and family: Craig, Peter, Matthew, Kehr, Bryn, Meri, Matt, Rob, David, Rachel, Liz, Victor, Umberto, Donald, Amanda, Molly, Katy, Adrian, Jocelyn, Melissa, Bonnie, Nick, Anna, Sam, Gabi, Luke, Adam, Jes, Stephanie, James, Marlene, Reggie, Cyd, Tim, Sophia and Frances and to all our past alumni who worked with such devotion to make Helsinki flourish.
The café will be open as usual for lunch and dinner and the club will feature some shows by old friends and some shows featuring great new talent. On Sunday, August 30th we are planning a Last Waltz farewell that will include music from special invited guests who have been a part of the Helsinki family over the years.
On our last day, August 31st, the doors will be open all day for folks who would like to stop in and say good-bye. Please show your support during these last weeks as we bid an affectionate farewell with music, food, hugs and celebration.

I can't believe it. We are about to move to the Berkshires from England. Helsinki was a definte draw. This is a huge disappoitment for us.

With the suddenness of all this it would be great to know what happened. They did a fantastic job and it seems that if they are planning to open up in Hudson it would be a real loss. Best of luck to you...

Sad news. Even sadder is the fact that this leaves GB without an affordable live-music venue (not to mention the intimate setting). Now locals will be forced to pay high dollar for music at the Mahaiwe or not see anything at all. Hopefully somebody will fill the gap...
