Sneak preview of TAKING WOODSTOCK
7.31.09

There was a street party in downtown Chatham, N.Y., last night in celebration of a sneak preview of the movie Taking Woodstock, much of which was filmed in and around the sleepy eastern New York town.
Director Ang Lee was on hand to introduce the film, as were screenwriter/producer James Schamus and Elliott Tiber, on whose memoir of midwifing the original 1969 music festival the movie was based.
I’ll have more to say about it when it opens officially at the end of August, but suffice it for now to say that through the intimate story of one family’s drama, the movie beautifully captures the meaning of the cultural and societal transformations that Woodstock symbolized.
The screening was a benefit for the Crandell Theatre, which a community group is attempting to purchase and restore to its former grandeur. Like Images Cinema in Williamstown, Mass., and the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass., the Crandell is a vital community asset for downtown Chatham and the region's residents.
