Weekend Cultural Highlights

5.21.09

Bob Dylan gets the tribute treatment this Sunday, his 68th birthday, at Club Helsinki

Memorial Day weekend is one of several mileposts that act as harbingers of the full-fledged summer cultural season. Several arts venues begin their summer programming this weekend.

MASS MoCA, for one, always kicks off its summer season on Memorial Day Weekend, and the North Adams-based cultural laboratory does so grandly this weekend, launching its 10th anniversary season with the opening of its summer exhibitions, Guy Ben-Ner: Thursday the 12th; George Cochrane: Long Time Gone; and This Is Killing Me; plus a big dance party on Saturday night featuring Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

The summer theater season gets something of an early kickoff this weekend with plays at three of the region’s big four theaters.

Barrington Stage in Pittsfield, celebrating its fifteenth anniversary this summer, opens with a staged reading of a new musical written right here in Pittsfield. Poolside At The Hotel Bel-Air, with music and lyrics by Nikos Tsakalakos, opens Barrington Stage’s fourth Musical Theatre Lab season with performances on Saturday and Sunday nights at 7:30.

Meanwhile in Lenox, Shakespeare and Company’s touring version of Romeo and Juliet returns home in a production opening Friday night at 8:30. The production, patterned after Shakespeare’s own touring road-shows, is directed by company member Jonathan Croy and features an ensemble of young actors who’ve been barnstorming the show across New England since the first of the year. The show runs at Shakespeare through June 7.

Down in Stockbridge, the Berkshire Theatre Festival opens its doors this weekend with the first Unicorn Theatre production of the season, Faith Healer, by Brian Friel. The play tells the story of Francis “Frank” Hardy, an Irish faith healer who tours the British Isles along with his manager, Teddy, and his wife, Grace, moving from town to town attempting to heal those with no hope for any other cure. The trio of actors in this production include Colin Lane as Frank, David Adkins as his manager, Teddy, and Keira Naughton as his wife, Grace. The play runs at BTF through the fourth of July.

Even the dance season gets a boost this weekend, when the Paul Taylor Dance Company performs in Great Barrington at the Mahaiwe on Saturday night.

The third Mahaiwe appearance by the company includes Taylor’s Funny Papers, danced to novelty tunes such as “Popeye the Sailor Man” and “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (On The Bedpost Overnight),” Scudorama, and Beloved Renegade, inspired by the life of Walt Whitman and set to Poulenc’s choral masterpiece, “Gloria.”

The musical weekend at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington kicks off tonight with folk-blues singer-storyteller Guy Davis, followed on Saturday night by old-time ensemble King Wilkie.

The weekend closes out on Sunday, with Helsinki’s annual birthday party for Bob Dylan, who turns 68 that day, featuring a handful of local musicians – including yours truly -- paying tribute to the poet-prophet of rock ‘n’ roll by performing a selection of his songs in a variety of styles and formats.

And finally, another sure sign that summer is almost is here is Arlo Guthrie’s annual spring revival shows at the Guthrie Center in Great Barrington, tonight through Sunday.
