Stella Rogovoy, 1938-2009

4.14.09

Stella Peretz Rogovoy, 71, of Seattle, Wash., devoted wife of 52 years to Lawrence Rogovoy, of Seattle, and daughter of Rose Schiff Peretz of New York, N.Y., died of complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis on April 9, 2009.

She leaves two children, Seth Rogovoy, of Great Barrington, Mass., and Ruth Berkman, of Seattle; a brother, David Peretz, and a sister, Marsha Howard, both of New York, N.Y.; and four grandchildren: Anna Rogovoy and Willie Watkins of Great Barrington, Mass., and Emma and Ben Kahle of Seattle.

Stella, who previously resided in Williamstown, Mass., ran an alternative health business. She was a member of Temple Beth Am in Seattle, where she chaired the Chavurah committee and served faithfully on the Scholar-in-Residence committee.

Having moved with her family to Islip, N.Y., in 1963, Stella was active in Sinai Reform Temple of Bay Shore, N.Y., where she taught religious school and served in many capacities as a temple officer and board member. She worked in the peace, civil rights, and anti-nuclear movements of the 1960s, and attended the historic 1969 peace moratorium rally in Washington, D.C. During this time she returned to school to earn a B.A in American studies from Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y.

Stella was a devoted craftsperson, working in ceramics and fiber arts, and was an accomplished quilter. She was a voracious reader and book-club member, and also enjoyed practicing tai chi.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Mass.

Dear Seth,
We were saddened to read of your mother's death, even though we didn't know her. As newcomers to the Berks, we feel like it's all family.

I am sorry to find this news while searching for my friend and adviser, her husband Larry. I have been out of touch for a few years and this news saddens me.
