Today's New York Times contains an unusually thoughtful and provocative essay by film critic A.O. Scott ("Never Forget. You’re Reminded."") on the endurance and growth of Holocaust films, now virtually a genre unto themselves. Scott asks some penetrating questions about the surfeit of films focusing on the Nazi era, Jewish victimhood and survival, and the different approaches taken by American, French, and German films.

Thank you for linking to the thoughtful article. Two things come to mind: First, the post-modern world seems to focus on story for meaning rather than analytical, ideological moorings. The Holocaust is a story that, indeed, we should never forget and always live to try and prevent in the future. Second, it was Neil Postman's thesis, I believe that nothing in our comunications oriented world is of value unless it entertains people. That, unfortunately cheapens the gravity of the Holocaust.
