The Biblical Roots of 'Blowin' in the Wind'

10.25.08

Everyone is familiar with these lines from Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind":

"How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
"

Oliver Trager, author of Keys to the Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, apparently had no idea what he was stepping in when he wrote of Bob Dylan's most famous song:

“… this song for the ages could have been spoken by the ancient sages—it seems to have been around at least that long.”

Indeed, in Ezekiel 12:1-2, G-d says to Ezekiel,

“Son of Man, you dwell in the midst of the rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house,”

and in Isaiah 11:3, it is written,

“He will be imbued with a spirit of fear for G-d; and will not need to judge by what his eyes see nor decide by what his ears hear.”

And thus just as it borrowed its melodic theme from the Negro spiritual of liberation, "No More Auction Block," the song that made Bob Dylan a household name (and a rich man) -- the song that launched the career of "Bob Dylan" as we know him -- drew its lyrical foundation and inspirational power from the Jewish Prophets, with whom the 21-year-old songwriter was obviously intimately familiar.

Look for Seth Rogovoy's BOB DYLAN: PROPHET, MYSTIC, JEW, or THE TALMUD OF BOB DYLAN, or whatever they decide to call it, in late 2009, from Scribner Books.

well everything has to come from somewhere...I don't think anyone pulls anything deep and profound out of thin air .....it's how it's put together and delivered that governs its impact , an ability that Dylan has in spades

Interesting and informative post. And since you are obviously a fan, I thought I'd introduce you to my new novel, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, which I think you'd enjoy.

It's a murder-mystery. But not just any rock superstar is knocking on heaven's door. The murdered rock legend is none other than Bob Dorian, an enigmatic, obtuse, inscrutable, well, you get the picture...

Suspects? Tons of them. The only problem is they're all characters in Bob's songs.

You can get a copy on Amazon.com or go "behind the tracks" at www.bloodonthetracksnovel.com to learn more about the book.
