NEW BACH FOR THE BERKSHIRES

9.24.08
(Great Barrington, Mass.) -- On October 11, 2008 the Berkshire Bach Ensemble, directed by Kenneth Cooper, will present an extraordinary event.

For the first time in the Berkshires, a virtually “new” set of works by Bach will be heard. Bach’s SIX GREAT TRIOS, well-known to organists as the Six Sonatas for Two Manuals and Pedal, will be given in new versions for chamber ensemble, enabling the works to be heard in an excitingly colorful manner and to a far wider audience. They will also be performed, probably for the first time, in Bach’s original sequence.

These six delightful and moving works, composed about 1730, inspired Bach’s biographer Forkel to write that “it is impossible to overestimate their beauty.”

They will be performed at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Great Barrington on Saturday night, October 11, 2008 at 8.

The Berkshire Bach Ensemble, known for its stirring performances of a great number of Bach works, especially its traditional New Year’s Brandenburg Concerti, is comprised of spectacular artists, featuring, for this event, string and wind players Eiko Tanaka, Irena Momchilova, Alistair MacRae, Peter Weitzner, Judith Mendenhall, Marsha Heller, Meg Owens, Stephen Walt, and of course, harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper.
