[EAGLE WATCH] Are there any editors?

8.31.08
Once again, a front-page story in the Berkshire Eagle is marred by poor grammar in the very first paragraph, or 'lede,' in newspaper lingo.

In today's paper, the writer of the bottom-of-the-fold story, "Lack of juvenile lock-up facilities 'just crazy,'" was ill-served by a copy editor who didn't catch this blatant lack of pronoun agreement in the second sentence of the article:

"When a juvenile is arrested and has to be held in custody until the arraignment, there is no where in the county to put them." [Emphasis added]

That sentence should have ended with the word "him," or have been rewritten from the beginning with a plural subject, e.g.:

"When juveniles are arrested and have to be held ..."

Also, nowhere is one word.

Another gremlin, presumably owing to an overeager automated spell-checker, allowed this laugher to get through in the third paragraph:

"All tolled, the juvenile has to endure a up to six hours in the back of a cruiser in handcuffs..."

It's possible that "All tolled..." was a joke, referring to the long drives (and tolls) on the Mass Pike needed to transport alleged juvenile offenders being held overnight to central and eastern Massachusetts while awaiting processing back in the Berkshires the next day.
