[FILM REVIEW] VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA by WOODY ALLEN

8.20.08
VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA

Written and directed by Woody Allen

Starring Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, and Rebecca Hall

Moving his locations from New York to Europe (to London for several films, and here to Spain) seems to have invigorated Woody Allen, and VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA is one of the best of his recent work.

There are shades of classics like ANNIE HALL and HANNAH AND HER SISTERS in the relationships among the characters, Updated for contemporary times and juiced with more overt passion and sensuality. Javier Bardem shows a whole new side to his actor self, Rebecca Hall is a stunning Discovery, Penelope Cruz is wonderfully eccentric, and Scarlett Johansson lets the others do the heavy lifting while her character winds up being the least neurotic in
one of the best movies of the year.
