2008 TANGLEWOOD SEASON, WEEK FOUR, JULY 25-31

DAVID ZINMAN LEADS THE BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN AN ALL-BRAHMS PROGRAM, FEATURING PIANIST YEFIM BRONFMAN, JULY 25 AT TANGLEWOOD

JOHN WILIAMS CONDUCTS THE BOSTON POPS IN POPULAR "FILM NIGHT AT TANGLEWOOD" CONCERT FEATURING MUSIC TO LATEST INDIANA JONES MOVIE JULY 26

ROBERTO ABBADO LEADS ORCHESTRA OF ST. LUKE’S AND SARAH CHANG IN MENDELSSOHN’S VIOLIN CONCERTO, JULY 27

(LENOX, Mass., July 12) -- Opening the fourth week of the Tanglewood season, David Zinman leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in an all-Brahms program that features Yefim Bronfman performing Piano Concerto No. 1 the Koussevitzky Music Shed on Friday, July 25 at 8 p.m.

Boston Pops Laureate Conductor John Williams will take the podium at 8:30 p.m. on July 26 to lead the Boston Pops Orchestra in the beloved "Film Night at Tanglewood," featuring music from Mr. Williams' latest score Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as well as music by other great cinematic composers.

Also, the Orchestra of St. Luke's under the direction of Roberto Abbado, performs Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with Sarah Chang at 2:30 p.m. on July 27. The program also features Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. PLEASE NOTE: Mr. Zinman, who will lead the July 25 BSO concert, substitutes for BSO Music Director James Levine, who will be absent from the remainder of the Tanglewood season due to unanticipated surgery that requires a six-week recuperative period; he is scheduled to return to the BSO podium on September 24 to open the Boston Symphony’s 2008-09 season.

A regular at Tanglewood, Mr. Bronfman made his debut at the festival in 1990 and returns to perform Brahms's grand Piano Concerto No. 1, one of several Brahms concerti engagements scheduled this summer with orchestras worldwide, as part of the BSO's all-Brahms program July 25 at 8:30 p.m. in the Koussevitzky Shed. The BSO's all-Brahms program at Tanglewood also includes the composer's tightly constructed Symphony No. 3. Bronfman last appeared at Tanglewood August 27, 2006, performing Beethoven's Fourth Concerto.

The popular annual event, Film Night at Tanglewood, features the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of the multiple Academy and Grammy award winner and conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, John Williams on July 26 at 8:30 p.m. in the Kousititzsky Shed. The concert consists of music of some of the greatest cinematic composers with Mr. Williams' own score to his latest collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There will be an open rehearsal for this performance at 10:30 a.m.

Roberto Abbado takes the podium to lead the Orchestra of St. Luke's in the only Shed concert by a visiting ensemble during the 2008 Tanglewood season at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. The New York-based chamber orchestra will perform Tower's In Memory, composed as a tribute to those who died on September 11, 2001, and Beethoven's stirring Symphony No. 7 in A. Sarah Chang joins Mr. Abbado and the ensemble for Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.

The Orchestra of St. Luke's gave its first Tanglewood concerts in July 1993, returning in 2001, 2004, and 2005. This will be the group's first performance here with frequent guest conductor Roberto Abbado. Sarah Chang made her Tanglewood debut in 1995 and returned in 1999 and 2003; all three performances were with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

OZAWA HALL PERFORMANCES

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra performs an extensive all-Mozart program under the direction of Gottried von der Goltz at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, in Ozawa Hall. The concert will include the composer's Symphony No. 36, Linz, with arias from Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro interspersed between movements. This unusual program configuration evokes the common practice of concerts in Mozart's day. Lorenzo Coppola joins the versatile chamber ensemble for the Clarinet Concerto in A, and Teunis van der Zwart is soloist in Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 1 in D, one of the composer's four complete concerti for horn. The program concludes with Symphony No. 34 in C.

The all-male choral ensemble Chanticleer collaborates with the Shanghai String Quartet for an 8 p.m. program on July 31 featuring Chen Yi's From the Path of Beauty, as well as Sametz' I Have Had Singing, Stucky's Cradle Songs, and Ligeti's charming Pápainé, Idegen földön, and Magány. The evening opens with a special 7 p.m. prelude concert by the Shanghai String Quartet, characteristically blending elements of Eastern and Western musical traditions by combining Ravel's String Quartet in F with Yao Dance, Shepherd's Song, and Harvest Celebration from ChinaSong.

PRELUDE CONCERTS AND THIS WEEK AT TANGLEWOOD

The Prelude Concert on Friday, July 25, at 6 p.m., in Ozawa Hall feature musicians from the Boston Symphony Orchestra: Julianne Lee and Bonnie Bewick, violins; Kazuko Matsusaka, viola; Mickey Katz, cello; Benjamin levy, double bass; and Elizabeth Ostling, flute, performing chamber music of Corigliano, Haydn, and Rossini. The Prelude Concert on Saturday July 26, at 6 p.m., in Ozawa Hall, will feature Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Fellows perform Eisler's mid-century, evocative Hollywood Liederbuch. Attendance to Friday- and Saturday-evening Prelude Concerts is free to patrons with tickets to the evening’s BSO concerts.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra presents a new Friday-evening panel discussion series, "This Week at Tanglewood," to take place at 7 p.m., prior to all BSO Friday evening performances. Featuring special guests in informal and engaging discussions, the series will be hosted by Ira Siff, the co-host of the Saturday Metropolitan Opera broadcasts and the off-beat satirical director and brains behind La Gran Scena. Each 45-minute session will include an overview of the coming week's schedule, including everything from BSO performances to Tanglewood Music Center concerts to children’s programming. Attendance to "This Week at Tanglewood" is free to patrons with tickets to Friday evening BSO concerts.
