Singer-Songwriter Brings Flamenco Flourishes

Sam Lardner and Barcelona at Club Helsinki

LIVE AT CLUB HELSINKI
Sunday, July 27th - 8:00 PM
Tickets $18

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., June 16th, 2008) -- Sam Lardner, a full-time resident of his band's namesake (that's Barcelona), is a seasoned veteran of American folk music. He's toured across the U.S. as a solo performer, and has led a blistering country group in Europe for seven years. Now, performing with a band comprised of local Barcelona musicians, Lardner has effectively fused two traditions - the folk end Lardner himself holds down, and his co-conspirators in Barcelona lend traditional flamenco structures to the stew. Sam Lardner and Barcelona will appear at Club Helsinki on Sunday, July 27th at 8:00 pm.

Lardner's voice pushes him into "why aren't you famous" territory, begging comparisons to James Taylor's most emotionally compelling moments and, when Lardner really decides to rip, to Sting. Beyond these easy points of reference, though, putting one's finger to the nature of Barcelona's sound is less simple. The pulse, though, is easily found, setting a crisp, funky pace. The band, comprised of internationally recognized guitarist Antonio Restucci, bassist Matias Miguez, and percussionists Alba Carmona and Marta Robles add their own rich musical traditions to the proceedings with their clapped rhythms and vocal harmonies. Traditional flamenco mingles with pure funk, and both gird Lardner's songs with fresh urgency.

The group's newly-released CD, Barcelona, mixes singer-songwriter ballads with rumbas and tangos, combining to create a melodic journey through complex shades of emotion, all dabbed with Mediterranean sun.

Tickets are $18 and are available in advance at Club Helsinki or Helsinki Café (284 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA), by calling (413) 528 3394, or online at www.clubhelsinkiweb.com.
