Jen Chapin to perform at Club Helsinki

6.12.08
Second Generation Urban Folk for Father's Day
Jen Chapin at Club Helsinki

LIVE AT CLUB HELSINKI
Sunday, June 15th - 8:00PM
Tickets $15

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., May 26th, 2008) Jen Chapin's songs bear the marks of both the political and the personal lives of their author. That Chapin is able to carry on a family tradition of social awareness and activism, and combine that strength with the emotional integrity of a singer-songwriter in that great tradition, speaks volumes for the singer's ability to fuse society and the individual in the work of one artist. Jen Chapin will perform at Club Helsinki on Sunday, June 15th at 8 pm.

The daughter of renowned folk performer Harry Chapin, Jen spent her youth in suburban Long Island, New York, and from there proceeded to Brown University to study international relations. Her college major afforded her the opportunity to study social justice issues in places like Zimbabwe and Mexico. Teaching has been a big part of Chapin's work since college, and even though she gave up a spot in a graduate teaching program to attend the Berklee School of Music, she has taught in Brooklyn public schools, developing and executing courses like "The History of Black Music.

The music is a perplexingly infectious mix of folk music with elements of pop, soul, and light funk. Chapin draws from a deep well of influence, and assembles collaborators from the jazz community who contribute to the effortless, patient accompaniment to her expertly crafted tunes. Chapin began her recording career with a self-titled EP, and has released a live album and two more studio efforts, accompanied by her husband, jazz bassist Stephan Crump. When she's not recording or playing (she cut her teeth in the New York club scene and has since toured the country), Chapin heads the board of directors of World Hunger Year, began by her dad, which funds grassroots initiatives to prevent world hunger.

Tickets are $15 and are available in advance at Club Helsinki or Helsinki Café (284 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA), by calling (413) 528 3394, or online at www.clubhelsinkiweb.com.
