Chris Smither at Club Helsinki, Friday, July 11th

6.11.08
Chris Smither at Club Helsinki

LIVE AT CLUB HELSINKI
Friday, July 11th - 9:00 PM
Tickets $25

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., June 11th, 2008) Chris Smither is an original. His roots go further than most; he came of age while young performers were finding a niche for guitar and voice in the 1960s, in Cambridge, Mass., and New York City, among other places. Now, down the line a bit, Smither is a seasoned craftsman, drawing deeply from his vast experience and bringing undeniable talent to the stage. Chris Smither will appear at Club Helsinki on Friday, July 9th at 9 pm.

Originally from New Orleans, Smither spent some of his youth in Paris (where he got his first guitar), a little bit in Mexico City, and, eventually, he wound up in Cambridge, on the doorstep of the burgeoning '60s folk scene. He established himself as a mover in the scene, with his blues chops and compelling original songs.

By 1970, he was collaborating with Bonnie Raitt and releasing albums, and although he was dropped by his label, he remained a fixture at folk festivals and New England clubs. Despite his success, however, his career stalled (for about 12 years) while he took to drink.

Smither didn't totally re-emerge until the early '80s, when he began to show up in histories of the Cambridge folk scene. By 1998, he had begun writing and recording again, and toured with Dave Alvin, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Tom Russell.

Tickets are $25 and are available in advance at Club Helsinki or Helsinki Café (284 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA), by calling (413) 528 3394, or online at www.clubhelsinkiweb.com.

and a photographer also! I bumped into him a couple of times at some small openings of photography shows in Boston in the late '80s. I think he's credited with the images on (some?) albums
