BOB DYLAN BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE features BIOGRAPHER SETH ROGOVOY

5.16.08
THIRD ANNUAL BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE TO HONOR BOB DYLAN AT CLUB HELSINKI ON MAY 25

Local musicians -- including Dylan biographer Seth Rogovoy -- to perform Pulitzer Prize-winning rocker's songs

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) - For the third year in a row, Bob Dylan's birthday will be marked at Club Helsinki when a host of regional musicians perform songs by the rock legend and recent recipient of a special Pulitzer Prize on Sunday, May 25, at 8.

As in previous years, the Rolling Rogovoy Revue will be the featured act. A longtime rock critic and editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living magazine, Seth Rogovoy, in the role of Bob Dylan, fronts a ten-piece ensemble including several veteran professional musicians - including Blotto's Paul Rapp, Splatter Trio saxophonist Dave Barrett, and Tom Werman, whose recording credits as a producer include Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, and Poison.

The band also includes several scholar/athletes from Monument Mountain Regional High School, including Rogovoy's son, Willie Watkins, on drums; keyboardist Luke Harrington; and Matt Meier, who plays bass alongside his father, Bill Meier, who serves as the group's lead guitarist and musical director.

Rogovoy, who served as pop music critic at the Berkshire Eagle for 18 years, is completing work on "Bob Dylan: Prophet, Mystic, Jew," a unique biography of Bob Dylan forthcoming from Scribner Books in 2009. "We'll be performing a mix of Dylan's greatest hits and some obscurities, mostly in surprising, lesser-known arrangements based on Dylan's live shows from the 1970s and our own idiosyncratic interpretations," said Rogovoy.

Other performers at Club Helsinki will include Kiki Dufault, John Clarke, and poet Matthew Tannenbaum. Helsinki's open-mike night host, singer-guitarist Rob Sanzone, is producing the tribute and will also perform.

This year, the Rolling Rogovoy Review truly lives up to its name as it also performs at the annual Dylan tribute at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., on May 22, and the Dylan tribute at the Peint o Gwrw Tavern in Chatham, N.Y., on May 24.

Dylan, who turns 67 on May 24, recently added the Pulitzer Prize to his closet full of honors, including lifetime achievement awards from the Kennedy Center and the Grammy Awards and the French Commandeur des Artes et des Lettres.

Admission to Club Helsinki's Dylan tribute is free but seating is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling 413.528.3394.
