Film Festival highlights cultural weekend in Berkshires

5.15.08
ROGOVOY REPORT for Weekend of MAY 16

The big news in the Berkshires this weekend is of course the third annual Berkshire International Film Festival in Great Barrington, Mass., based at the Triplex Cinema but with events also taking place at the Mahaiwe Theatre, Mixed Company, and other venues throughout town. On Thursday night, the festival kicked off with an opening night party at Pearl’s Restaurant and a showing of the documentary, Man on Wire, about famed tightrope walker Philippe Petit and his legendary attempted walk between the Twin Towers of the erstwhile World Trade Center in New York City. Petit himself was in attendance at the screening.

The festival continues throughout the weekend with feature, documentary, and short films, many featuring filmmakers in attendance. Friday’s special event is a tribute to Kevin Bacon, with the actor in attendance as well as Natasha Richardson, Peter Reigert, and Lori Singer, and a screening of Bacon’s film The Big Picture. Sunday’s special event is a special screening of the new digital version of the classic sci-fi thriller Blade Runner, featuring special effects master Douglas Trumbull in attendance. The cultural weekend in the Berkshires includes plenty of other happenings.

• Speaking of film, Saturday at 2, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge will screen Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist, a documentary about one of the pioneers of the art of the graphic novel. The filmmakers will be on hand. (www.nrm.org, 413.298.4100)

Club Helsinki’s weekend of music in Great Barrington kicks off tonight with the eclectic singer-guitarist Matt Smith, originally from Albany, fronting his wild and crazy band. Tomorrow night legendary jazz and soul musician Olu Dara, a Helsinki favorite since the night eight years ago when he inaugurated music at the club, returns to the stage at Helsinki for what promises to be a night of sweaty funk. And Sunday night, Natalia Zukerman, daughter of world-famous violinist Pinchas Zukerman and flutist Eugenia Zukerman, makes her parents proud by singing American folk and blues, accompanying herself on resonator slide guitar, backed by the Jason Spooner Trio. • For those of you who thought punk-rock was dead, take heart: Baltimore’s Beatnik Termites will make a rare live appearance headlining a veritable punk festival on Saturday at the Ballroom at the Econo Lodge in Lenox starting at 7. The Beatnik Termites are one of the few remaining bands of the 1990’s punk explosion who were directly influenced by the Ramones, the founding fathers of punk. Joining the Beatnik Termites will be The Prozacs from Springfield, Pittsfield-based punks The Poncherellos, Millions Dead, and the up-and-coming ska combo The Pop Collars.

• On Saturday night, Bernice Lewis, the Berkshires’ first lady of new-folk singer-songwriter music, performs at the South Congregational Church in Pittsfield at 7. (413.442.9982)

• Also on Saturday, the New England Baroque Soloists and the Cantilena Chamber Choir perform at 6 at Trinity Church in Lenox. (www.gildedage.org, 413.637.3206)

• The Berkshire Concert Choir presents a “Haydn Gala” on Sunday at 3 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Pittsfield. The concert features Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War,” along with “Te Deum” and other selections. Soloists include soprano Susan Gonzalez, mezzo Deborah Rentz-Moore, tenor Alan Schneider, and bass Jack Brown. (413.442.6120)
