Singer/composer Jenny Scheinman at MASS MoCA is weekend's top pick

ROGOVOY REPORT

Jenny Scheinman boasts two new terrific CDs; to perform Saturday night at MASS MoCA

Jenny Scheinman is that rare specimen in music: A multitalented multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and composer, whose music encompasses forms ranging from ethnic folk to classical to cutting-edge avant-garde. Highly in demand as a violinist on recordings and concerts by people like Norah Jones, Bill Frisell, Lucinda Williams, Madeline Peyroux, and Marc Ribot, Scheinman is finally breaking out on her own, with two new recordings being simultaneously released later this month. Crossing the Field is her fifth instrumental album, full of cinematic soundscapes ranging from the ethereal to the clamorous. And the eponymous Jenny Scheinman reveals Scheinman to be a vocalist of startling intensity and authenticity, on original songs and renditions of old-time country, bluegrass, and blues selections by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Mississippi John Hurt, and others. Imagine Lucinda Williams crossed with John Williams and Gyorgi Ligeti, and you get an approximation of Scheinman’s range. She performs an intimate duo set with guitarist and vocalist Tony Scherr at MASS MOCA in North Adams, Mass., tomorrow night at 8.

Other Highlights of the Berkshire’s cultural life this weekend include:

The Berkshire International Film Festival, which takes place in just two weeks here in Great Brrington, is getting a jump on things with a sneak preview this weekend at the Triplex Cinema on Sunday, when filmmakers Richard Atkinson and Jane Scandurra will be on hand to discuss their documentary, Single, examining the growth of unmarried adult singles in America, after a free screening of the film at 11 a.m.

• Speaking of free, Bach’s “Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor’” will be performed on Sunday in the Bach & Beyond series at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Great Barrington at 11:45 a.m. The 45-minute program also includes organ passacaglias (a variation form) by Buxtehude and Andre Raison, on which Bach based his own benchmark composition. Also on the program, along with commentary by organist Charles Olegar, is the 19th-century masterpiece “Choral in B Minor” by Cesar Franck, performed by associate organist Tim Boomer.

• There’s still more for Bach fans. Later that same Sunday, harpsichordist Victor Hill will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his series, Griffin Hall Concerts at Williams College, with a complete performance of Bach’s "Goldberg Variations." The culmination of Bach's harpsichord compositions, this work was also the program when Hill inaugurated the series in 1968. The free concert at 3 is at The Clark in Williamstown.

• It’s old time weekend at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington, kicking off tonight with old time American roots music by Amity Front, followed tomorrow night by old time jazz and swing by the Blue Ribbon Boys. Don’t even THINK about going to Helsinki Sunday night, when old time-style folksinger Iris Dement performs – that show has been sold out for weeks. But there are still tickets available to see former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay – remember the 1980s MTV hits “Who Can It Be Now” and “Down Under”? – on Wednesday night at 8.

• And over in Northampton, comedian George Carlin is at the Calvin Theatre tonight. Texas singer-songwriter James McMurtry, son of novelist Larry, is at Pearl Street tomorrow night. And women’s music pioneer Holly Near is at the Iron Horse on Sunday night.
