Weekend Highlights

10.12.07

A busy weekend ahead of culture in the Berkshires includes:

• Roots-rock singer-guitarist Matt Munisteri is at MASS MoCA tomorrow night at 8

• Don’t even THINK about going to Club Helsinki in Great Barrington tomorrow night, where bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley performs in a show that’s been sold out for weeks. But no mere consolation is the concert by singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky, one of the best of the new-folk crop, on Sunday night at 8 at Helsinki.

• Dance lovers will want to catch Ailey II, an outgrowth of the Alvin Ailey dance company, at the Mahaiwe in Great Barrington on Saturday at 8.

• Classical music lovers will groove to the luscious sounds of Ensemble Schumann, performing works by Robert Kahn, Mozart, and, of course, Robert Schumann, at the Clark in Williamstown on Sunday at 3.

• Meanwhile, for theater lovers, The Secret of Sherlock Holmes continues to run at Shakespeare and Company in Lenox, as does Educating Rita at the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, The World Goes Round at Barrington Stage in Pittsfield, and Dear Liar at the Chester Theatre Company in Chester.

• And art lovers will be celebrating the opening of a show, “Locally Grown,” at the Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield, tomorrow. The event also features a Studio Pottery Invitational, featuring work by leading ceramic artists in the region, and culminates with “Locally Grown, Locally Thrown,” a dinner to benefit IS183 Art School in the Berkshires, tomorrow night at the gallery.

10/15/2007
dear seth,
i'm a 22 year old, and when i really started listening and being passionate about music, all my favorites the doors, jimi hendrix and led zeppelin to name a few were either broken up or deceased. now what is a young person to do with radio and tv polluted by this pop culture of cheesy and overemotional lyrics? in your article, you talk about the evolution of music... before elvis, music was to be listened to, so the gershwin's and the like were popular, then when tv's came out, elvis gave them something to watch, which ended with the beatles. led zeppelin broke down that door and gave us something in depth to listen to and think about with the quality of their art, and the music scene pretty much went downhill from there.
i wish more than anything to be awaiting the next led zeppelin cd to come out, but it just isn't going to happen. but, great music and rock and roll isn't dead, it just isn't on tv or the radio anymore. it's personal, we (as listeners) have to seek this music. good bands these days don't fall into concrete genres, they change the sound consistantly with the topic of lyrics. myspace/facebook and itunes has made it both easier and harder for these bands, these bands rely on ticket sales and these outlets are a source of free advertisement for them, but the problem is that there is too much stimuli out there that it is hard for them to get recognized.
i have traveled to tennessee three years in a row to seek this culture at the bonnaroo arts and music festival to see live music that is known and loved by fans of a simular passion for music such as radiohead, dave matthews, jack johnson, trey anistasio, les claypool, and ben harper to name a few but also, to get introduced to bands of like style as well. bands like umphrey's mcgee, the disco biscuits, michael franti and spearhead, citizen cope, damien rice, and john butler. and when these bands come around the north east, you can see them for about $20 and get real close. probably the most special thing about this culture of music is that they make the music for the fans, they improvise, cover songs from classic artists we never got a chance to hear and special guests of other amazing performers isn't uncommon.
in july i went to see a band dispatch at msg, which i have been into for a couple years, they were officially broken up, but they put on a benefit for zimbabwe and it was the first show by an independently signed band that sold out msg and they did it 3 nights in a row. this is a band from walpole massachusetts, never been on the radio or mtv and i met people from montana, illinois and colorado there who made the trip to nyc just to see them.
i have plenty more to say about this subject, and if i had more time maybe i could get to it all, but feel free to email me and let me know what you think. thanks for listening
-brendon
