[THEATER REVIEW] BLACK COMEDY at Barrington Stage

7.23.07
BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY
Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer
Through August 4

review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

(Pittsfield, Mass., JULY 23, 2007) -- Courtesy of the same dramatist who gave us the highly complex, psychologically intense dramas Equus and Amadeus -- both seen in recent years in terrific productions at Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge -- comes Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer, given a delightful staging at Barrington Stage Company.

Not nearly as intensely challenging as either of those other dramas, Black Comedy is a simple summer evening's entertainment, a light-hearted farce whose greatest claim to fame is the inventive manner in which it deals with darkness and light. No spoilers here, let's just say that the staging of scenes in the midst of a blackout are startling, and even suggestive, in what they say about people functioning "in the dark" or "out in the open."

Other than that, this witty farce is given an utterly enjoyable production directed by Lou Jacob. The performers are all good and very well balanced -- no one steals the well-balanced show. The set is well designed and the one-act play builds its tension and releases it in under 90 minutes -- in my book, an ideal summer night at the theater. No one will leave disappointed after seeing Black Comedy at Barrington Stage.

Hey Seth: Would this show be appropriate and/or appealing to a moderately sophisticated seven year old cultural consumer?

Seth Rogovoy replies:

YES!
