Klezmer supergroup to perform at National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst

4.12.07
National Yiddish Book Center presents
Brave Old World – Song of the Lodz Ghetto

Amherst, MA – The National Yiddish Book Center, located on the campus of Hampshire College, 1021 West Street, Amherst, MA, 01002, will present a Lazarus Family Concert in commemoration of Yom Hashoah. Brave Old World’s unique musical-theatrical work, Song of the Lodz Ghetto, will be presented on Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 2:00 pm. Reservations are suggested. Tickets are $18. A special lecture by music director, Alan Bern, exploring the history of the Lodz ghetto and its music will be offered on Sunday, April 15 at 11:30 am. Tickets are $5.

World-renowned Brave Old World has set new standards in creating, performing and teaching klezmer and new Jewish music since 1989. Combining the soulfulness of Yiddish tradition, the finesse of classical music, and the vitality of jazz, the music of Brave Old World is unique and unforgettable. The musicians include Michael Alpert (voice, accordion, violin, guitar, percussion), Alan Bern (music director, piano, accordion), Kurt Bjorling (clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone. accordion, tsimbl) and Stuart Brotman (bass, tsimbl, tilinca, percussion, trombone.)

A musical and spiritual journey of resistance, love, and reconciliation, Song of the Lodz Ghetto is a song cycle in which memory and imagination interact to create a journey between present and past. At the center are Brave Old World's arrangements of rare Jewish street and cabaret songs from the ghetto of Lodz, Poland, during Nazi occupation. Combined with the Lodz repertoire are Brave Old World's original compositions. Michael Alpert's moving “Berlin 1990” forms the emotional and musical counterpoint to the passionate and ironic street songs of the bard of the Lodz ghetto, Yankele Herszkowicz. The entire program is presented in Yiddish, with projected English supertitles.

Michael Alpert has been a pioneering figure in the current renaissance of East European Jewish klezmer music for 25 years, and is internationally known for his performances and recordings with Brave Old World, Khevrisa, Kapelye, and David Krakauer. Raised in a Yiddish-speaking family, he is considered the finest traditional Yiddish singer of his generation, and is noted for his original Yiddish songs on contemporary themes.

Alan Bern is one of the best-known performers and composers in Jewish music today. In addition to directing Brave Old World, he has performed and recorded with the Klezmer Conservatory Band, the Klezmatics, Andy Statman, Shirim, Kapelye, Itzhak Perlman, Seymour Rexite, the Symrna Trio, Paris-to-Kyiv, Guy Klucevsek, and many others.

Kurt Bjorling has been musical director of the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble since 1984 and he has also toured and recorded with the Klezmatics.

Stuart Brotman has been a moving force in the Klezmer revival and has performed with The Klezmorim, Kapelye, Andy Statman, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, Khevrisa, Davka, The San Francisco Klezmer Experience, and Itzhak Perlman,

The National Yiddish Book Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing Yiddish and other modern Jewish literature and celebrating the culture they contain. Programming at the National Yiddish Book Center is a project of the Jack and Ruthe B. Cowl Center for Jewish Culture. This concert is partially funded by the Lazarus Family.
