[FILM REVIEW] The Lives of Others

4.6.07
THE LIVES OF OTHERS

Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

Starring Martina Gedeck, Ulrich Mühe, and Sebastian Koch

(In German, subtitled)

Review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and award-winning critic-at-large of BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

THE LIVES OF OTHERS is a quiet but brilliant look at life in a police state -- in this case, East Germany shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The movie's intimate portrayal of a few people's lives on both sides -- secret service spies and artists pushing the edge of how far they can pursue individual expression unfettered by the dictates of the state, and how their loyalties are constantly challenged -- played against the brutal reality of the mechanisms of totalitarianism, has rarely been portrayed with such tense intelligence.

Running at the Triplex for at least the next week.
