[FILM REVIEW] Painted Veil

1.18.07
PAINTED VEIL

Directed by John Curran

Adapted from a novel by W. Somerset Maugham

Starring Naomi Watts and Edward Norton

Review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

PAINTED VEIL is a love story set in the 1920s that tells of a young English couple, Walter (Edward Norton), a middle class doctor, and Kitty (Naomi Watts), an upper-class woman, who find themselves locked in a marriage of convenience, or inconvenience as the case may be (hard as it is to believe that a marriage to Naomi Watts could be "inconvenient," but that's the movies for you).

Walter accepts a governmental research position in Shanghai, where Kitty is terribly bored and winds up having an affair. When Walter discovers the affair, he practically blackmails Kitty into joining him in a remote village plagued by a cholera epidemic -- putting both their lives, not to mention their love (or lack of such), at risk.

Against the background of the gorgeous Chinese countryside, a violent nationalist uprising, and the harsh conditions amidst the epidemic, the couple come to gain much greater perspective on and appreciation for their relationship, and just what love is. Several other relationships around them help to put theirs in perspective, including that of the British High Commissioner, played by Toby Jones, who almost steals the show; and Diana Rigg, as the Mother Superior of the local convent.

PAINTED VEIL is a slow moving, beautifully acted, achingly bittersweet old fashioned, literate love story. It devotes great dignity and respect to the characters, who repay with magnificent performances.

Currently running at the TRIPLEX in Great Barrington, Mass., through January 25, 2007.
