[FILM REVIEW] The History Boys

1.3.07
SETH's FLICK PICK

by Seth Rogovoy, editor-in-chief, BERKSHIRE LIVING

THE HISTORY BOYS

Originally a hit Broadway play by Alan Bennett, the film version of THE HISTORY BOYS occasionally betrays its origins in didactic theater, and the opposing polar elements in this drama about a group of English schoolboys trying to get into OxBridge are just-so-architectural.

Fortunately, Bennett's adaptation for the screen overcomes those few drawbacks with witty, snappy dialogue and richly drawn characters, among them two teachers vying for the boys' loyalty and affections, and the school headmaster, played by Clive Merrison like an homage to John Cleese's insufferable bureaucrats from "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

But it's the liveliness and gusto of the boys that draws you in. Their camaraderie is precious and inspiring, and the period touches by director Nicholas Hytner -- including some pitch-perfect musical selections from the early-1980s setting, such as The Clash's "Rock the Casbah" -- also help to make this movie -- ostensibly a serious drama about what education is or should be -- into one of the funniest, most entertaining films of the year.

Playing through January 11 at the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass.
