[FILM REVIEW] Casino Royale

12.10.06
I'm not a huge James Bond fan -- I can hardly tell the difference between Sean Connery and Roger Moore. Apparently some other actors have played James Bond along the way, but that's more than I can process.

Plus, about Casino Royale, am I totally deluded, or the only person who remembers that in the late 1960s this was a James Bond spoof starring Woody Allen and Peter Sellers -- a James Bond MOCKERY? COMEDY?

In any case, in spite of my cluelessness, this new James Bond movie, this new Casino Royale, was thoroughly enjoyable and great fun. The actor who now plays Bond, whatever his name is, does a fine job, and actually gives the character some depth and personality. The plot is clever, and many of the thrills and chases are really of the old-fashioned kind -- car chases, Hitchcockian heights and the like.

This isn't my kind of movie, but in this case, it was a thoroughly enjoyable night at the movies.

Casino Royale is playing at the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass., at least through December 14.
