Critics massacre Twyla Tharp Dylan dance/musical
11.1.06
Coming as no surprise to anyone with half a brain who could have smelled disaster in the simple construction "Twyla Tharp choreographs an evening of dances to the music of Bob Dylan," indeed the critics are having a field day with what sounds like an abomination.
Critic Ben Brantley had fun with it in last week's New York Times in his review "Tharp and Dylan, A-Knockin’ on the Circus Door", in which he wrote, "If you happen to be among the masochists who make a habit of attending the entertainments called jukebox musicals, in which pop hits are beaten up by singing robots...even these spectacles of torture with a smile, frightening though they may be, are but bagatelles compared with the systematic steamrolling of Bob Dylan that occurs in The Times They Are A-Changin.”
But the winner by far in the nail this thing closed sweepstakes is Terry Teachout in his review, "Stuck Inside the Theater With the Broadway Blues Again," in the Wall Street Journal, in which he writes, "Mr. Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of the postwar era and Ms. Tharp one of its most admired choreographers, so how bad could it be? Now I know: "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is so bad that it makes you forget how good the songs are."
i heard they'll lose $10 million
if it fails !

I saw it and likes it, as did the full house on one of the preview nights. I hated mamma Mia and Jersey Boys for being wooden and trivial. "Times" was in a much higher league. Shame it won't do well. Critics are all-powerful.

The show is a masterful work of genius and was totally reviewed by ignorance.
