In pilgrimage from past to present, 'Papers' needs a map

STOCKBRIDGE -- ``Think history," the narrator of ``The Pilgrim Papers" begins, stepping out in front of a painted backdrop of the Mayflower in full sail. Quickly he adds: ``Don't worry -- it's not that kind of play."
The question is, then, just what kind of play is it? Sometimes it's a farcical sketch, full of scattershot topical jokes, and sometimes it asks us to take it seriously. That combination isn't necessarily fatal, but it would take a clearer throughline and tighter structure to help us follow the hairpin turns in tone.
