[DANCE REVIEW] Trey McIntyre Project at Jacob's Pillow

PROGRAM:

Like a Samba, music by Astrud Gilberto
Just, music by Henry Cowell
Go Out, gospel and old-time country

review by SETH ROGOVOY, critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING magazine

(Becket, Mass., August 3, 2006) -- It was a hot, muggy, sweltering night at the Ted Shawn Theatre last night, but that didn't stop the vast majority of the audience from sticking around after intermission for the second act of the TREY McINTYRE PROJECT's evening of modern ballet.

THat says a lot about the appeal of Trey McIntyre's choreography. Built on classical ballet but ripped away from traditional storytelling, McIntyre's dances explore the nuances of compelling music found in such seemingly unlikely places as Astrud Gilberto's bossa nova, Henry Cowell's avant-garde chamber music, and traditional Southern American music of the church and the back porch.

The dancers McIntyre assembled for these pieces were obviously well-trained at executing his precise commands, but also were sympathetic to his larger vision, creating colorful tableaux, working with perspective and depth of field, and arranging still lifes. McIntyre is a most painterly choreographer who makes terrific use of colored backdrops, lighting, and the striking images that silhouettes provide.

In his emphasis on letting music drive his dances, and having dancers move in coordination with the music, in his love of folk music and the inherent possibilities for dance they suggest, and in his subtle humor, tweaking ballet's stuffiness while at the same time utilizing its language and grammar, McIntyre resembles no one more than Mark Morris. But with his female dancers on pointe, McIntyre still has one, or maybe even one-and-half, feet planted in the world of ballet, such as it is, and for that reason alone, his program this week at the Pillow is a tremendous crowd-pleaser, as it was last night for a hot but clap-happy audience.
