[THEATER REVIEW] Servant of Two Masters at Shakespeare & Company

7.29.06
SHAKESPEARE & COMPANY
The Servant of Two Masters
by Carlo Goldoni
Rose Footrpint Theatre
through August 26, 2006

review by SETH ROGOVOY, critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING magazine

(Lenox, Mass., July 29, 2006) -- The Servant of Two Masters, a free romp playing under a tent at the Rose Footprint Theatre at Shakespeare & Company this summer, may seem like an afterthought, or a pleasant diversion. It is, and it isn't. It certainly IS pleasant and diverting and wonderfully entertaining, but it's also deceptive -- it's a celebration of theater itself: full of comedy, tragedy, entertainment, improvisation. It's a witty farce, full of double entendres and contemporary asides, slapstick comedy, commedia-inspired mistaken identifications, exciting swordplay, overacting, bawdy comedy, in-jokes, and audience participation.

It features a terrific, ragtag ensemble, all of whom are fun, but especially worthy of note are Catherine Taylor-Williams, Karen Lee, and Michael Burnet -- when they're on stage, you forget you're at a casual comedy and are simply swept away by their command of the stage and comic craft.

The price is right, and it's not to be missed.
