[MUSIC REVIEW] Tanglewood on Parade, July 26, 2006

TANGLEWOOD
Tanglewood on Parade
July 25, 2006

Review by SETH ROGOVOY, critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING magazine

(Lenox, Mass., July 26, 2006) -- As is done every year, Tanglewood pulled out all stops, figuratively and literally, and put on a daylong show-and-tell program that had a little something for everyone yesterday, showcasing everything from its student players to its visiting conductors to the Boston Pops, the Symphony, and its three star conductors: James Levine, Keith Lockhart, and John Williams.

For the evening concert, after what must have been an exhausting weekend of nonstop Mozart, Levine led the BSO through the paces of George Gershwin's quirky CUBAN OVERTURE. It was a tribute and testament to Levine's openmindedness and musical curiousity, and as in his performance last summer of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, Levine found sophisticated modern nuances in what might otherwise be an overlooked piece.

Stefan Asbury led the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra through the moddy paces of Leonard Bernstein's score to the film ON THE WATERFRONT, in what must have been meant as a tribute to the composer who spent many years teaching young musicians at Tanglewood. The orchestra and the conductor emphasized the music's drama, and deserved the rousing ovation that greeted them at the end of the work.

The rest of the evening included Keith Lockhart conducting the Pops in Ellington's HARLEM, Williams conducting his own score to the film JFK, and, as always, the closing rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 OVERTURE followed by thunderous cannon blasts and fireworks.

As always, the day and the evening was a success in the manner in which it demonstrated that classical music is not somethign to be feared or foisted upon audiences for their own good, but rather as something that at its very foundation is essentially human and accessible, something that has always been functional at heart, whether its providing music for dance, for atmosphere, or for reflection, and that it is evocative of various times, events, places, and cultures.

It seems a simple message, but it's one that can get lost in the intense, daily scrutiny of the technical perfection of the performances at Tanglewood, sometimes to the exclusion of the beauty and heart that lies at the roundation of the musical project.

In that way, and always in that way, Tanglewood on Parade is a highlight of the summer season.
