At Tanglewood, Scintillating Send-Offs for Don Giovanni and Mozart

LENOX, Mass., July 23 -- As if to lay the Mozart anniversary year to rest, James Levine and the Boston Symphony Orchestra spent much of the weekend here at the Tanglewood Festival concerned with last things.

The Friday evening program juxtaposed Mozart's final piano concerto (No. 27, the "Coronation") with his final symphony (No. 41, the "Jupiter"). The opera "Don Giovanni," presented in concert on Saturday night, dispatched its antihero to his just reward in hell very near the witching hour. And on Sunday afternoon the Tanglewood Festival Chorus joined the orchestra in sending off Mozart himself, to the strains of his own unfinished "Requiem."

Given Mr. Levine's wealth of experience in opera and his expertise in choosing and working with voices, the "Don Giovanni" performance shaped up in advance as the highlight, and it met expectations. With the surest of hands, Mr. Levine set a scintillating pace and maintained impetus throughout the long evening. He kept the reduced orchestra in fine balance with the singers and traced a persuasive arc in the drama (largely left to the imagination) as well as in the music.
