[EAGLE WATCH] Hypocritical headlines once again

7.16.06
The Berkshire Eagle has long worn its anti-Israel drapery with pride. But this morning the Eagle has outdone even itself.

On a morning when dozens of Israelis have been killed and more wounded by Iranian-supplied missiles raining down on Israeli cities (including Haifa) and towns in the north, the paper sees fit to position the news in its lead story on the front page thusly: "Israel hits with fury: Beirut attack amped up."

To read that headline, one would think that Israel was the aggressor, and not the one defending itself from history's most devastating and frightening terrorist war.

How many times have we read "what if missiles get into the hands of terrorists?" Now we have seen actually this situation come to pass. What are the Jews supposed to do? Roll over and play dead? Raise a white flag?

The world isn't exactly rushing to Israel's defense. The United Nations hasn't passed any resolutions insisting that Lebanon defuse the attacks. The Bush administration hasn't threatened the shot-callers in Damascus or Tehran with any kind of serious punishment if they don't pull the strings needed to make the missiles stop flying.

By any objective stretch of the imagination, the headline should read "Israel defends against deadly attacks."
