Critics discuss their art
By Derek Gentile, Berkshire Eagle Staff

Monday, July 10
GREAT BARRINGTON -- Richard Dyer, longtime classical music critic for the Boston Globe, recalled yesterday asking a fellow critic why he sometimes slept through performances he was reviewing.

"I don't have to take more than one bite of an omelet," said the other critic, "to know it's bad!"

Dyer's yarn came as part of a panel discussion by a trio of well-known commentators yesterday morning at the Triplex Cinema in Great Barrington.

The panel was part of Berkshire Living magazine's "Rest of the Story" series hosted by the magazine's editor-in-chief, Seth Rogovoy.

The theme of the panel was sparked by the magazine's annual Summer Preview issue.

Besides Dyer, who has been a Globe critic for 35 years, other panelists were Ed Siegel, a former Globe theater and television critic, and Deborah Jowitt, the longtime dance critic for the Village Voice.

The three shared their thoughts on a number of topics, including what each believes makes a good review.
