Mahaiwe Theatre's grand reopening

MAHAIWE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Opening night celebration
42nd Street
with special guests
June 30, 2006
Review by Seth Rogovoy, critic-at-large, Berkshire Living magazine
(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., July 1, 2006) -- A new era in Berkshire arts and entertainment began last night with the grand reopening of the Mahaiwe Theatre, restored to its once glorious luster and new and improved with comfortable new seats, state-of-the-art technical equipment, air-conditioning, and an entirely new basement level with an exhibition of historic photographs and much-needed twenty-first century restroom facilities.
The interior renovation included the restoration of the decorative filigrees and lights to its 1930s era, and the theater, with its remarkable sightlines and intimate acoustics, is clean and comfortable. It's a welcoming spot, and the audience enjoyed the well-chosen movie musical 42nd Street to kick off the next century of programming at the century-old gem.
On hand to add opening-night thrills and excitement were dancer Marge Champion and TV film critic Gene Shalit. Following the film, dancers from BERKSHIRE PULSE entertained the crowd with a terrific chorus line reminiscent of those from the era of the film immediately preceding.
The Mahaiwe promises to infuse the local cultural season with a new spark and a well-rounded variety of much-needed year-round programming. It succeeds at once as an innovative presenter of film, dance, music, theater and all the performing arts, as well as a very important, downtown-based restoration project, insuring the perpetuation of a vibrant cultural nightlife accessible to all in this small market town and hub of the region. As such, it will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of life in this town for many years -- decades or at least another century -- to come.
