[PET PEEVE] Dog walkers who let their dogs sniff people

7.1.06
YOu know what I really hate?

I walk around town a lot. And what I really hate is when people who are walking their leashed dogs on public sidewalks allow the dogs enough rope to sniff or lick other people -- their legs, their hands, whatever.

I had a dog for ten years and walked her all over the place and I was always very mindful and considerate of other people's space, and never allowed my dog to violate that space.

Think about it -- would these same people allow their young human children to sniff other people? or lick their hands? Then WHAT in the world makes them think it's all right for their canine companions to be intimate with total strangers?

Why should I have to go out of my way to avoid a dog's uninvited nose or tongue while I'm on my way to work or to the market? Why should I have to cede space to this lesser species? Why should DOGS have the right of way over people?

The more you think about it, the more audacious and totally outrageous a violation of human space, human rights, and human sanctity is this ongoing assault of the creatures at the hands of their negligent masters.

If dog owners aren't willing to take responsibility for curbing their dogs and insuring that they keep to their own space - and NOT violate the space of others (any more than THEY themselves would) -- they then risk, or SHOULD risk, legislation forbidding the use of public space in which to parade their pets, and instead be confined to their own private property or other property, entry to for which they should have to pay.

That's what I really hate.

I totally agree. Be glad you are not female or the dog would be sniffing in intimate areas. When these close encounters happen, sometimes including a doggy charging you at high speed, so many dog owners will just smile benificently and assure you, "he doesn't bite." In my dark moments, I attribute it to rampant narcissism (of owners not dogs).

They have this new thing to stop things like this happening! It's called a Shotgun!

Smell is a dog's main sense. A dog sniffing you is equivalent to a person looking at you. I'm so sorry I let me dog look at you.
