Newspapers should be locally owned

7.1.06
"Newspapers are the soul of a community and they should be locally owned," the New York Times, in "Yearning to Put Papers Back in Local Hands," quotes a Los Angeles businessman who would like to see that city's paper of record, the Times, out of the hands of its out-of-town (Chicago) owners and back in the hands of people who live in Los Angeles and breathe its air.

"Increasingly, businesspeople and civic leaders are showing interest in owning their local papers again," according to the article.

Here in the Berkshires. the sale of the Berkshire Eagle, the paper of record that was once hailed nationwide as a small-town gem, to a Denver-based corporation is widely thought to have begun a downward spiral that has seen the paper fall from its perch. The paper's local resources have been gutted, and the paper's leadership, which for years came from local ranks, has long since been replaced by generic, cookie-cutter-minded businesspeople who view local newspapers as miniature versions of USA Today.

The article says that across the land, consortiums of local businesspeople who believe in the importance of local ownership of their newspapers as "a way to preserve a city's identity" are buying back their papers from the faceless chains.

What could be more helpful for the revival of Pittsfield, Mass., and the Berkshire region as a whole, than to rescue the Berkshire Eagle from the clutches of the generic corporation that has destroyed the paper's unique identity and therefore stifles regional growth and identity?
