Jewish, Jamaican, and R&B music featured along with film this weekend at Club Helsinki

5.11.06
Besides featuring 40 films, including features by the likes of Robert Altman, documentaries, shorts, and regional productions, the Berkshire International Film Festival , debuting this weekend, will also provide an opportunity for attendees to enjoy an extraordinary lineup of musical performances taking place at Club Helsinki, just across the parking lot from festival headquarters at the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass.

On Friday night at 10 p.m., Helsinki presents Josh Dolgin, better known as SoCalled. As heard on his two innovative, clever CDs, The Hip-hop Seder and The Hip-hop Khasene, SoCalled takes familiar Jewish life-cycle events and rituals and puts them in a blender of old recordings, found sounds, electronics, and new instrumentals and vocals, and weaves a new, smart, entertaining tapestry of new Jewish music that can appeal to all ages.

On Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Helsinki presents Everton Sylvester and Searching for Banjo. Sylvester is a brilliant poet and spoken-word artist, who intones his sometimes wry but always astute and pointed observations of life on the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as back in his childhood home of Jamaica (the Caribbean island, not the Queens town) in a beautiful, mellifluous voice backed with subtle, r&b-influenced jazz that punctuates, underlines, and emphasizes the poignancy and comedy of Sylvester's terrific work.

Late Saturday night, around 10 p.m., avant-garde jazz clarinetist Don Byron, who lives in nearby Woodstock, N.Y., brings his much-touted Jr. Walker and the All-stars project to Helsinki. This is certain to be a hugely fun and enjoyable evening, as Jr Walker was one of the greatest honking R&B saxophonists, best-known for the huge hit, "Shotgun," which practically is the DNA of the genre.

I'll be camping out at Helsinki all weekend when I'm not in one of the theaters at the Triplex or nearby Mixed Company enjoying the incredible lineup of films the good folks at BIFF have cooked up for us. Be sure to say hi. And if you're so moved, buy me a Laphroaig. or a Lagavulin. or a Macallan. or an Oban....

Seating is limited, so for guaranteed admission and advance tickets to these concerts at Helsinki, call 413.528.3394 immediately.
