(Eagle Watch #9) Incisive, fair critique of Pittsfield's

9.4.05
Charles Bonenti's "ArtShow ends summer run with contradictory verdicts" column in today's Berkshire Eagle is must reading. Bonenti combines a wide range of reporting with personal analysis of the summer sidewalk 'galleries ' -- rental booths from which juried artists sold their wares -- touted for their potential to bring tourists to Pittsfield's gritty downtown.

Those who spent any time at these downtown galleries undoubtedly questioned the wisdom and efficacy of the effort. Indeed, last Saturday, a gorgeous, sunny, dry afternoon -- one of the ONLY nice weekend afternoons of the summer -- the sidewalk art sale was supplemented by an all-day free outdoor music festival featuring a host of regional acts. THe only thing it DIDN"T feature was an audience -- the few dozen people watching the show were comprised almost entirely of relatives of the musicians, supplemented by a healthy dose of North Street's ample social-service-oriented population. There weren't even any food vendors in sight, save for former chef and police office Dennis Powell, who Pittsfield has treated so badly he is reduced to selling Italian ices.

This was hardly a shining testimony to Pittsfield's highly touted, arts-based renaissance. If it really is "happening," it's not clear what "it" is....yet.
