What happened to Bruce Springsteen?

7.31.05
The first three paragraphs of Stephen Metcalf's essay, "Faux Americana: Why I still love Bruce Springsteen, trenchantly describe what has annoyed and disappointed me about Bruce Springsteen -- whom I still regard as one of the greatest performers in rock -- since 1977. I only wish Metcalf had talked a bit about how Springsteen's voice morphed over the years, too, from the sound of a New Jersey beach rat to a faux Okie. What's THAT all about? READ MORE

I forgive Bruce his authenticity sins, especially since he left his cali actress wife for his joisy singer wife. Rock has always been about thievery, and The Boss steals from the best(Bob, Woody, & Stax). And he has been so good at it for so long, that lots of troubadours have been stealing from him for years(try Steve Earle's "What's A Simple Man To Do").
Sure, I actually bought Bruce's early '70s phony raps about pissing off his daddy, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.. Plus, many a truth spoken in jest...
These days I admire Bruce, but I rarley listen. It is informative that Metcalf ignores The Rising, by my estimation, Springsteen's most milquetoast effort, but spends much ink on a speech that pokes fun at Bono, who is a much bigger bullshitter than Bruce ever will be.
