(BERKSHIRE LIVING) Public forum on wireless hotspots

7.15.05
WIRELESS HOTSPOTS to be DEBATED at PUBLIC FORUM

(Great Barrington, Mass., June 26, 2005) -- "Wireless Hotspots: Brave New World or Brave New Nightmare?" will be the topic of the second in a new series of public forums entitled "The Rest of the Story," a co-presentation of Berkshire Living magazine and the Triplex Cinema, to be held at the Triplex on Sunday, July 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The forum will bring together a panel of experts to discuss ongoing efforts to provide wireless access to the Internet to consumers in the region’s cafes, schools, downtowns, and rural areas.

"Our July issue includes a fun article by editorial assistant Amanda Rae Busch called 'Wireless and Waiting' surveying the region’s free, wireless hotspots," said Seth Rogovoy, editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living, a new, regional lifestyle and culture magazine.

"We thought it would be interesting to build upon that piece and dig deeper into the culture of wireless, and invite those who are bringing wireless access to underserved populations to discuss their work," said Rogovoy, who will moderate the forum -- which will include representatives from Betterway.net, WiSpring, CompuWorks, and Café Topia -- with the assistance of Busch.

Each month, the Triplex and Berkshire Living join forces to present public forums based on an article running in the concurrent issue of the magazine.

Upcoming forums include "Sideways in the Berkshires: Nothing to Wine About," featuring a wine-tasting from local wineries, on August 21. Advance reservations for the free forums are available by calling the Triplex box office (413.528.8885, www.thetriplex.com); for more information, call Berkshire Living at 413.528.3600.

So what happened in the discussion about hotspots? It seems like it's something that is needed, but there's lots of problems inherent in such a project that I am not sure that those who are not versed in it would know.

I'm a Lenox native who has been living in Cambridge for more than a decade. I've involved in wifi networks of the type that may well be suited to the Berkshires (or Berkshire County, as I like to call the area). I'd like to talk to people about setting up wifi hotspots, mesh networks, and the like. It might be a good excuse to move back!
