(Theater Review) Fuente at Barrington Stage Co.

7.11.05
BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY
Fuente by Cusi Cram

Through July 17

The little theater company that could is on a roll.

It's on a roll this summer, scoring two-for-two so far, following up the blowout production of FOLLIES with the engrossing world premiere of the drama, FUENTE.

And these two successes of course follow up the astounding shooting star that was last year's 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE.

But back to FUENTE, the semi-absurdist, sometimes comic drama being given an imaginative staging on BSC's second stage now through July 17.

This tautly written play that takes place in an uncharted Southwest desert town tosses a crew of small-town losers out of David Mamet into a stew of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's magical realism, stirs the pot, and out comes a veritable tableau of Americana right out of Tony Kushner.

In this case, the play, which is nearly two plays in one, focuses on two dreamy, magical women--Adela, played by Zabryna Guevara, and Soledad, acted by Lucia Brawley, and what happens when their dreams of lives beyond their stations and their men collide.

The performances are well delineated and vividly characterized. The minimalist staging, which conjures up various locales with just the simple rearrangement of a set of four benches, is inventive and convincing. The writing is witty and snappy, and the play's right turn after intermission is sure to keep playgoers' on their toes.

A little editing or trimming toward the end of the first half might tighten the focus and bring the play down to a more manageable length, but otherwise Barrington's production of FUENTE is a stellar effort, and one that will only further the company's reputation for scouting and developing great new works in the tradition of EARS ON A BEATLE and THE SHAPE OF THINGS -- a reputation that the theater company vitally needs to cement in order to successfully manage its transition from its rural setting in Sheffield, Mass., to its new home in the gritty, urban environs of downtown Pittsfield, Mass.
