May 30, 2005 We went to the opening of "Becoming Animal," the big new exhibition at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, on Saturday night. We were a little bit surprised at what seemed to us to be a small turnout, but that could have been by design -- this was a members-only plus press opening (we were there as both), and the big public opening happened yesterday (Sunday), a day which was scheduled to culminate with a concert by David Bromberg (an acquired taste which we've never acquired). As for the exhibition itself, it's as weird, provocative, and disturbing as one might expect of an exhibit of contemporary art that explores "the space between man and animal." I think I know what that means -- for five years in the 1990s I was pumped on a weekly basis with dog hair and cat dander, and I always thought that was kind of odd and must have accounted for my tendency to bark when threatened and lick my paws when dirty. Weird videos, sculptures, paintings, and installations (including the world's largest Habittrail housing a white rat) comprise the exhibition. Art openings are never really good times to spend really digging into artworks, so I'll need to head back there some time in the next few months to give the works a better chance. But it's always fun to visit MASS MoCA, even if the hype about the renaissance of North Adams is a little overblown. |
