FILM REVIEW: The Town

Ben Affleck and Rebecca Hall in "The Town"

THE TOWN
Written and directed by Ben Affleck
Starring Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively and Pete Postlethwaite

Review by Seth Rogovoy

Ben Affleck is slowly becoming to Boston what Martin Scorsese is to New York. Affleck knows his way around Beantown and its unique precincts, as he demonstrates in The Town, a crime drama that delves into the oft-overlooked Bantustan of Charlestown, which is as different from the North End, Southie, and Beacon Hill as Flatbush is from the Village, the Upper West Side or Jackson Heights. With terrific performances by Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Pete Postlethwaite and Affleck himself, the director gets the nuances of Townie life pitch-perfect while delivering a suspenseful, cliffhanger of a heist film that also includes a hot romance with the lovely, full-lipped Rebecca Hall (she-who-almost-stole-Vicky Cristina Barcelona-from-Scarlett Johansson). For comic relief, the film even includes a ham-fisted portrayal of an FBI agent by Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame, who turns out to be a one-note actor born to play Don Draper and no one else.

Seth Rogovoy is Berkshire Living’s award-winning editor-in-chief and cultural critic.
