(Great Barrington, Mass.) – World-renowned classical pianist Emanuel Ax will give a performance to benefit the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 7:30pm.

The event is in celebration of the naming of the theater’s stage in honor of Lola Jaffe for her leadership and vision in transforming the historic theater into the vibrant year-round cultural destination that it is today.

Gala fundraiser tickets are $175 to $500 and include a post-performance reception with Mr. Ax at allium. A limited number of performance-only tickets in the balcony are available for $65 each.

The Mahaiwe is located at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington, Mass. Box Office Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6pm and 3 hours before show times. For tickets and information, see www.mahaiwe.org or call the Mahaiwe Box Office at 413.528.0100.

Emanuel Ax first captured public attention in 1974 when, at age 25, he won the First Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975, he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists and, four years later, the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. He has been an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist since 1987, and his newest releases include period-instrument performances of Chopin’s complete works for piano and orchestra and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with Bernard Haitink and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

In recent years, Ax has turned his attention toward the music of contemporary composers, giving the world premieres of John Adams’ Century Rolls in September 1997 with the Cleveland Orchestra, Christopher Rouse’s Seeing for Piano and Orchestra in May 1999 with the New York Philharmonic, and Bright Sheng’s Red Silk Dance in January 2000 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ax regularly performs chamber music with such artists as Young Uck Kim, Jaime Laredo, Cho-Liang Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, and Peter Serkin. He is a member of the Mahaiwe’s Artistic Council.

Lola Jaffe is Founding President and Chair of the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. She has been actively involved in the arts for the past twenty years. She currently serves as Vice President and Secretary of the Jaffe Foundation, Secretary of the Board of Directors of American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Overseer of Boston Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation.

Ms. Jaffe works to bring appreciation of the arts to younger generations through her work with the Anne Levinson Fund for Experiencing the Arts (ALFEA) and her co-sponsorship of the Berkshire Theatre Festival summer program for Berkshire County high school students. Her past affiliations include Chairman of the Board of Directors of Berkshire Opera Company and member of the Board of Directors of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Company. She was named 2006 Person of the Year by the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, the 2007 Citizen of the Year by the Great Barrington Rotary, and in May of 2008 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).
