FILM REVIEW: Up in the Air
12-30-09

Up in the Air
Written and directed by Jason Reitman
Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick and Jason Bateman
by Seth Rogovoy
This movie is full of surprises - it tricks you into thinking it's a romantic comedy, and then it sneaks up on you to reveal its heart of darkness. Jason Reitman is fast becoming one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation; he knows how to let a story develop slowly and in surprising ways, and he sure knows how to use locations and camera movements to evoke mood and meaning. George Clooney and Vera Farmiga are magical together, like an old-fashioned Hollywood romantic couple (think Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn) deconstructed and reconstructed for this this anti-sentimentalist, existential anti-romance for the 21st century.
[Running at the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass.]
