[BOOK REVIEW] LUSH LIFE by Richard Price

11.29.08
Lush Life Lush Life by Richard Price

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
For several nights in a row this book kept me up WAY past my bedtime. In the guise of a police procedural, it combines the qualities of a page-turner mystery with the elements of a great novel. Price's ear for dialogue is unerring, and his command of his territory -- NYC from top echelons to bottom, including cops, crooks, vics, and innocent bystanders -- is unsurpassed. Fans of "The Wire" will especially love Lush Life, as the hero, Matty Clark, can easily be a stand-in for McNulty, and his sidekick, Yolanda, could be Kima. Price digs deep into his characters' psyches, demons, and private lives, which is what makes Lush Life transcend genre to be considered a work of literature, one worthy of the New York Times's accolades as one of the best works of fiction of 2008. And now that I'm done reading it, I can sleep again. Phew!
